As we bid farewell to the fruitful and fulfilling year of 2024, we warmly welcome the hopeful and promising year of 2025.
For the Winnipeg Chinese Senior Association (WCSA), 2024 was a year of significant challenges. Despite substantial funding cuts from federal and provincial governments, we achieved remarkable accomplishments through the unwavering efforts of our dedicated volunteers and members. These achievements showcase the resilience and collaborative spirit of our organization.
Looking back on 2024, WCSA has much to celebrate:
- Knowledge Dissemination :
Since our founding in 2017, WCSA has hosted 24 health seminars. In 2024, we expanded our efforts by organizing numerous knowledge-sharing events, including sessions on government services and benefits. These initiatives have equipped our community with valuable and practical resources.
- Major Events
For the third consecutive year, WCSA successfully hosted the Canada Day Celebration in Bridgwater, bringing joy and excitement to thousands of residents through the dedicated efforts of 230 volunteers. Additionally, we continued to uphold cultural traditions by organizing events such as Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Double Ninth Festival, along with themed activities like Children’s Day, Double Seventh Festival, and the Christmas Fun Party.
- Charitable Contributions
In collaboration with the Salvation Army, 85 WCSA volunteers dedicated 321 hours to the Christmas kettle fundraising event at Winnipeg South Costco, raising $25,000 to support community welfare initiatives. We also partnered with organizations such as the Salvation Army and Pembina Active Living 55+ to implement programs focused on language, culture, and social connections.
- Community Engagement
WCSA held its first Orange Shirt Day event to raise awareness about truth and reconciliation, participated actively in Winnipeg’s 150th Anniversary celebrations, and partnered with Save-on-Foods Pharmacy to provide free vaccinations for community members. Furthermore, the WCSA Board addressed challenges faced by newcomers to all levels of government and offered personalized, one-on-one support to help newcomers settle into the community.
- Regular Classes and Programs
Hundreds of WCSA members enthusiastically participated in weekly activities, including exercise routines, cultural classes, English conversation lessons, and interest clubs. We also collaborated with partners to introduce new programs such as children’s lion and dragon dance and modern dance. Additionally, we organized events like ping pong tournaments, singing contests, chess competitions, and essay contests, offering diverse opportunities for all age groups.
- Volunteer Service
In 2024, over 500 WCSA volunteers, ranging in age from 8 to 80, contributed more than 12,000 hours of service to the community.
This year, we not only served the community but also introduced more inclusive, intergenerational, and cross-cultural programs. Through diverse activities and team-building initiatives, WCSA continues to demonstrate its ability to unite people and foster health, happiness, and a sense of belonging.
Looking ahead to 2025:
WCSA remains steadfast in its commitment to serving the community and promoting inclusivity. We aim to create even more opportunities for health, happiness, communication, and unity for all members of our community.
I sincerely thank every member and volunteer for your support and dedication. Together, let us stride forward into an even brighter future!
Wishing everyone a Happy New Year filled with good health, happiness, and family joy in 2025!
